About

The LMS is the UK's most prestigious learned society for the promotion and extension of mathematical knowledge. The Society was founded in 1865 and granted a Royal Charter in 1965. Alan Turing was a long-standing member of the LMS and Albert Einstein even attended one of our Society Meetings!
As part of our mission, we provide hundreds of grants and fellowships to mathematicians to help with their research, publish many high-quality journals and books and organise dozens of events, conferences and workshops in the UK throughout the year.

Our most prestigious event is the Popular Lecture, which is an annual free public lecture which present exciting topics in mathematics and its applications to a wide audience. The Popular Lectures are for anyone with an interest in mathematics, including those without high-level maths training.

Previous Popular Lecturers include Matt Parker, Hannah Fry, Roger Penrose, Marcus du Sautoy, Mark Miodownik and Vicky Neale.

This year's speaker is Sarah Hart (Gresham Professor of Geometry, Professor Emerita of Mathematics and Fellow of Birkbeck, University of London), author of 'Once Upon A Prime: The Wondrous Connections between Mathematics and Literature.'

This event is free of charge and open to all ages, whether LMS members or not.

We welcome school groups and other large parties to this event, please contact education@lms.ac.uk for any bookings of 10+ people.

Programme (all times in BST):  18:30 - Arrival  19:00 - Sarah Hart (Birkbeck, University of London)  The beautiful connections between mathematics and literature  In this lecture we'll look at some of the many ways that mathematical ideas and structures can be found in literature. From the hidden algebra behind poetic forms, to a novel whose underlying structure uses a mathematical puzzle that took 200 years to solve, we'll see that the links between mathematics and literature are beautiful and profound – and can enhance our appreciation of both subjects.   20:15     FINISH
